In 2022, Beth, a beautiful single mother to her 2-year-old daughter Isabella, received the devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 bowel cancer. This news came as a shock to all of us, as Beth had shown no symptoms and was initially misdiagnosed with food poisoning and was sent home. However, Beth’s unwavering determination led her to advocate for herself, demanding further tests which revealed the true extent of her condition. On May 21, 2022, at 12:21 am, Beth’s world was turned upside down when doctors delivered the life-altering news. Within 24 hours, she underwent major surgery to have a bowel resection.

The following 24 months were an uphill battle. Despite her circumstances, Beth remained incredibly optimistic, continuing to work full-time in her role as HR Director at Colgate-Palmolive while undergoing 18 rounds of chemotherapy. Throughout this time, she was the primary caregiver for her daughter, Belle. In August 2023, Beth underwent another 11-hour surgery, during which she received an outpouring of support from people all over the world. The surgery, though extensive, resulted in the removal of many of her organs and the lifelong necessity of a stoma bag. Still, Beth’s positivity never wavered.

Beth’s fierce fight against bowel cancer was nothing short of heroic. She left no stone unturned in her quest for a cure, exploring every possible treatment avenue.
In November 2023, Beth and her sister Helen embarked on an adventure overseas to a holistic alternative cancer clinic renowned for its innovative treatments. Beth’s journey, marked by grace and dignity, continued to inspire those around her as she faced every challenge with remarkable strength.

Tragically, in February 2024, Beth passed away, leaving behind her now 4-year-old daughter and a family and community who adored her. Her story is not just one of personal resilience but also a stark reminder of the importance of early detection in combating bowel cancer, the deadliest disease for individuals aged 25-44.
We believe that sharing Beth’s story could significantly raise awareness about bowel cancer, emphasising the critical need for early detection and proactive healthcare advocacy. Beth's journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, and her legacy can continue to save lives by educating others about the signs and importance of early cancer detection.

Our one piece of advice for others:

If I had to give one piece of advice to others regarding bowel cancer, it would be this: Prioritise early detection through regular screenings and being attentive to any unusual symptoms.

Early detection of bowel cancer significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery. Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, can catch cancer or pre-cancerous polyps before symptoms even appear. Additionally, being vigilant about changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal discomfort, and rectal bleeding can lead to earlier diagnosis and intervention.

Advocating for your health, even when it feels uncomfortable or inconvenient, can make a profound difference.
